Kid pack goats Hector and Ricky join me for their first desert creek adventure! Come along for fall camping, peaceful sandstone canyons, and from-scratch campfire cooking with three pack goats and two dogs. I’ve explored this wilderness before, but never in the fall—and never with the two youngsters. This time, Bill, Hector, Ricky, Maggie, and Ursa join me as we follow quiet desert streams through golden fall colors and towering sandstone walls. Sometimes the creek itself becomes our trail. Our campsite is tucked into a beautiful canyon surrounded by cottonwoods, cedars, and ponderosa pines. Before cooking dinner, I carry my chair to a few favorite spots to slow down, enjoy the creek, and soak in the autumn scenery. On the camp menu: • Steak stroganoff made from scratch: beef seared in rich beef tallow with mushrooms, onions, and freshly chopped garlic, finished in a velvety cream sauce with Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Prepared outdoors on the Firebox Octagon Fire Pit Stove. • Freshly baked cinnamon rolls topped with homemade cream cheese frosting and blueberries. Following a viewer’s suggestion, I try setting up the reflector oven INSIDE the Octagon rather than alongside it—and the rolls turn out beautifully. After dinner, we settle in beneath the stars with the canyon walls rising above us. The dogs curl up beside me under the blankets, and the goats stay secured nearby where I can keep an eye on them. Morning brings more quiet time beside the creek, coffee, and beef-tallow biscuits and gravy. I bake the biscuits inside the Octagon, too. A little too much heat underneath means some scraping and flipping, but breakfast still turns out delicious. Outdoor cooking doesn’t always go perfectly—that’s part of the adventure!
