Seventy percent of kids quit organized sports by thirteen. Tara Rall has spent nearly three decades on the other side of that statistic, and her read on it is that the reasons are rarely the ones the gym assumes. Sometimes it is burnout. More often it is a coach mismatch nobody named, a skill block that quietly turned into a confidence problem, or a schedule that forced a kid to choose between two things they wanted to do. In this conversation Tara walks through how she gets to the actual reason, starting with sitting down with the coach, the athlete, and one parent, and telling the kid up front that they are not in trouble. For owners, most of this episode is operational. Tara covers the attendance policy she ran for years and how she loosened it once she accepted that families have lives outside the gym. She covers publishing gym closures a year in advance so families can plan vacations around them, which also gives the owner and the staff a real break instead of a week of phone calls from the beach. She covers the half-year prep program as a place to put the multi-sport kid who would otherwise leave entirely. And she is direct about coaching your own coaches out of the ultimatum, because a two-week deadline on a skill produces stress far more often than it produces the skill. There is also a story about a mother who demanded a meeting because her daughter would not flip. What Tara told her in that room changed where the athlete put her energy, and that athlete went on to win Worlds.
