Old Man Banjo by Rufus Quade is a Southern Gothic story-song from Blackwater about an old man who plays tomorrow before it happens. Nobody knows his real name—or how he hears it first. One August night, his picking breaks off clean. By sunrise, the old ferry cable is hanging busted in the stream. Another night, his porch stays completely quiet. “Already heard this one.” By morning, a bridge beyond the county line is down. But the strangest part is the unfinished melody Old Man Banjo plays every Sunday at sundown. He never finishes it—and when somebody finally asks why, his answer leaves Blackwater with one question nobody can settle. Rufus Quade tells strange American stories through Southern Gothic, Dark American Folklore, Dark Americana and roots music—mysterious characters, backwater legends and unexplained events that never quite give up their answers. Muted banjo, dry acoustic guitar, dusty harmonica and a heavy half-time roots groove carry the story. What do you think happens when that Sunday melody finally ends?
