"The Light I Left On" — an original slow soul-blues ballad about waiting on someone who isn't coming back.
She's kept the porch light burning for twelve hundred nights. She still sets out two cups. She still sleeps on her half of the bed. The neighbors have stopped saying his name out loud — but every night at nine, she reaches for that switch anyway.
Recorded in the tradition of Etta James, Koko Taylor, and Bessie Smith — 12/8 slow blues in C minor, Hammond B3, hollowbody guitar, and a female vocal that comes apart by the last chorus.
If this one hits you, leave a comment and tell me who you've been leaving a light on for. I read every one.
🎵 LYRICS 🎵
The porch light's been burning since the second of June
Moths keep on coming — they don't know no better, and Lord, neither do I
Still setting out two cups every time the coffee's done
Still sleeping on my half like you're coming home tonight
The neighbors quit asking
Quit saying your name out loud
But every night at nine
I'm still reaching for that switch —
I'm burning up the light I left on for you
Twelve hundred nights and I ain't turned it down
They tell me let it go — but they don't understand
That light's the last piece of you still hanging 'round
Your coat's still on the hook, third one from the door
I don't touch it — I just walk a little slower going by
Those roses that you planted didn't make it through the winter
And I ain't found the words yet, so I never told you why
My sister says I'm sinking
Says a house ain't meant to grieve
But she ain't never had to be
The one who don't get to leave
I'm burning up the light I left on for you
Twelve hundred nights and I ain't turned it down
They tell me let it go — but they don't understand
That light's the last piece of you still hanging 'round
Maybe I'm the fool this whole town says I am
Maybe love's just a habit that I can't put down
But somewhere in all that dark it's got to count for something —
One small burning window in a cold and sleeping town
Saying come home
Come home
Come home
I'm burning up the light I left on for you
Twelve hundred nights and I ain't turned it down
They tell me let it go — but they don't understand
That light's the last piece of you still hanging 'round
Still burning… still burning for you…
