In 2025, four turbines on the seabed of the Inner Sound, between mainland Scotland and the island of Stroma, generated 13.1 GWh of electricity. According to figures reported by Ocean Energy Europe, that was more than 80% of all the electricity produced by tidal stream turbines anywhere in the world that year.
This video looks at the six things behind Britain's lead in tidal stream power: the fast water of the Pentland Firth, the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, Orbital Marine Power's floating O2 turbine, machines that have now survived years underwater, a power source that can be predicted decades ahead, and the plans to scale up. It also covers what is still small and unproven: MeyGen is 6 MW today, the technology is still expensive, and the 59 MW expansion is targeted for 2027–2029.
