From January to September 2026, China shipped 109,744 excavators to other countries, more than the 104,530 it sold at home. Meanwhile, Caterpillar is still the biggest construction equipment maker on the planet, and it just posted a record quarter.
We follow the numbers behind that headline: the year China's home market collapsed and pushed its factories outward, what the 2026 Yellow Table says about Caterpillar, Komatsu, XCMG and SANY, where Chinese machines are landing from Africa to France and Brazil, and how close they have come to an American job site. Then we give Cat's side of the story, including what even the Chinese industry admits it still lacks.
No politics. Just industry data, company filings, and a rule of thumb in hours per year for anyone shopping for an excavator in the next 12 months. The biggest number in the story is saved for the end.
Would you put a Chinese excavator on your job, or does the dealer down the road decide it for you? Tell us in the comments.
