Today was one of those days when motorsport goes from absolutely glorious to really shit in a tenth of a second 😅
Exactly as we'd hoped, the first round of the 750 Motor Club Roadsports Championship opened into a fierce battle with Matt Creed's Clio. Starting ahead, I managed to stay there into the first corner and then it was hammer and tongs the whole way. I don't think we were ever more than four car lengths apart, and usually somewhere between one and zero 😂 I had to use (almost) every trick in the book to keep Matt behind while we pulled away from the pack, and finally after 15 minutes he slipstreamed his way past out the back of the circuit.
Right then. Role reversal. Now I had to hang onto the back of the Clio, and now I had the chance to watch where he was strong and where I could make up ground. By now the Class A race leaders were coming through to lap us, adding more ebb and flow to the race, but I stayed in touch and kept running down the clock until it was time to swap over to Imran Khan.
He didn't get his chance. Committing ten tenths to the Complex, I heard a bloody great bang followed by lots of grinding noises and a big change in engine note. The car was mobile so I dived into the pits, fortunately only a couple hundred yards away, and jumped out to find the entire exhaust hanging on the floor under the car. It had broken its mounts, and there was no quick fix. Game over.
Imran was a saint, completely understanding and jumping straight in to help get the car roadworthy - which we reckon we've managed, it seems OK so far! I'm gutted he didn't get to convert that stunning qualifying performance into a race win. One thing's for sure, he's starting the next race! Matt Creed went on to win, so we'd better bring a more lasting A-game to the next round at Brands Hatch GP in three weeks' time.
Over and out.
