China has begun construction on the world's most ambitious hydropower project on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, just upstream of India. Estimated to cost around $168 billion, the project will consist of five massive hydropower stations built through one of the deepest gorges on Earth. But because the river becomes the Brahmaputra after entering India, the project has triggered major geopolitical concerns. In this video, we explain how the Yarlung Zangbo Mega Dam will work, why China chose this location, the engineering challenges of building in the Himalayas, and why Indian officials have called it a potential "water bomb." We also explore the project's impact on Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bangladesh, renewable energy, and the future of water security in Asia.
