Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. The cold is also the safest thing about it. Five rings inland, and the danger changes shape at every single step. The Arctic has polar bears, wolves and foxes. Antarctica has no land predators at all, and it is still the place no human has ever survived without a supply system behind them. That gap is the whole story of this video documentary. We travel from the tourist coast to the sealed core, and at every ring the threat becomes something different. At the edge it is absolute isolation, which is why every resident of one Antarctic town must complete strict medical procedures before arriving. Further in it is a ground that lies to you, and an air so dry it severe dehydrates your body while the cold hides your thirst. Deeper still it is the polar winter, when evacuation flights simply stop being possible and medical emergencies must be handled entirely on-site. Then the map itself runs out, because ninety-three percent of what we "know" about the bedrock under the ice was never measured at all. And in the final ring, the thing stopping us is no longer physical. We can reach Lake Vostok. We did reach it. The problem is that touching it destroyed the answer. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 – THE INTRO 02:47 – RING ONE: THE COAST 04:29 – RING TWO: THE GROUND LIES 07:20 – RING THREE: THE SEASON NOBODY COMES 09:40 – RING FOUR: THE SECOND CONTINENT 12:04 – RING FIVE: THE FORBIDDEN ZONE 13:00 –THE OUTRO SOURCES AND NOTES Temperature record: the minus 89.2C figure is the lowest AIR temperature ever directly measured at a weather station, at Vostok Station in 1983. Lower readings of minus 93C to minus 98C are satellite-measured SURFACE temperatures and are not official records. Fresh water: Antarctica holds roughly 90% of the world's surface fresh water (British Antarctic Survey). Mining ban: the Madrid Protocol prohibition has no expiry date. 2048 is only the earliest point a review conference can be requested. Lake Whillans, drilled cleanly in 2013, had been isolated for thousands of years. Lake Vostok's isolation is estimated at 15 to 25 million years. Subscribe for more science & nature documentaries:
