In 263 AD, a man alone in a room came closer to solving the infinite than anyone in history.
His name was Liu Hui. The world has almost no memory of him.
This is not a biography. This is a descent into one of the most extraordinary minds the ancient world ever produced — a mathematician who, without algebra, without calculus, without any of the formal language that would not exist for another fourteen centuries, understood something that Isaac Newton would not formalize until 1,400 years later.
Liu Hui worked in 3rd-century China, during the fractured era of the Three Kingdoms. He wrote a commentary on an ancient mathematical text. Inside that commentary, almost as a footnote, he solved a problem that had haunted mathematicians for centuries: calculating pi.
He solved it by doing something that sounds simple — and is, in truth, an act of breathtaking intellectual courage.
He drew a polygon inside a circle. And he kept doubling the sides.
Sixty-four sides. One hundred and twenty-eight. Three thousand and seventy-two.
He was approaching a limit he could never reach. Chasing a truth he could never fully possess. Doing calculus before calculus had a name.
He arrived at a value of pi correct to five decimal places.
Then he set down his brush and disappeared into history.
This video asks the question that Liu Hui's life demands: what truths exist today, unnoticed? Who are the Liu Huis of our time — working in silence, centuries ahead of the world's ability to see them?
