Hundreds of thousands hit by flight delays - watch the ITV Evening News LIVE

The transport secretary has said an air traffic control fault which resulted in more than 1,000 cancelled flights was "not unavoidable" and called for an independent review into the issue. Addressing the House of Commons, Heidi Alexander said "tough questions" need to be asked about the incident. Earlier on Wednesday Alexander met the under-pressure head of air traffic control as disruption from Tuesday's technical outage continued to cause flight cancellations. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe is facing increasing pressure to resign after the third major disruption in recent years. Flight monitoring website Flightradar24 said 1,300 flights had been cancelled to and from UK airports on Tuesday after a system issue hit NATS, which provides air traffic control services to 15 UK airports. Tens of thousands of passengers were caught up in the chaos, which continued on Wednesday with cancellations and delays as airlines dealt with the knock-on impacts at airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted. Also on the programme: The Metropolitan Police have opened a criminal investigation into allegations that Reform UK broke the law in relation to foreign funding. The foreign secretary has rejected the suggestion that he has put British Jews at risk by announcing sanctions on illegal West Bank settlements.
