Lesson 3 | Qaida Tamheed-ul-Quran Makharij al-Huruf (Articulation Points of the Arabic Letters) In this lesson, we discuss Makharij al-Huruf, the articulation points from which the letters of the Holy Quran are pronounced. Makharij is the plural of Makhraj. Linguistically, Makhraj means the place of خروج (coming out). In the terminology of Quranic recitation, Makharij refers to the specific places from which the Arabic letters are articulated. There is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the number of Makharij: Imam Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad: 17 Makharij Imam Sibawayh: 16 Makharij Imam Al-Farra: 14 Makharij The five major articulation areas are: Al-Jawf — The empty space of the mouth and throat Al-Halq — The throat Al-Lisan — The tongue Ash-Shafatan — The two lips Al-Khayshum — The nasal passage Makharij Discussed in This Lesson 1. Al-Jawf: The letters of Madd — ا، و، ي — are articulated from the empty space of the mouth and throat. 2. Al-Halq: The throat has three articulation areas: Deepest part of the throat: ء، ه Middle part of the throat: ع، ح Upper part of the throat: غ، خ These six letters are known as Huruf al-Halqiyyah (Throat Letters). 3. Al-Lisan: The tongue has several articulation points. Qaf (ق) is pronounced from the deepest part of the tongue, while Kaf (ك) is articulated slightly forward from it. Then Jeem (ج)، Sheen (ش)، and Ya (ي) are articulated from the middle of the tongue when it approaches the upper palate. This area is known as Shajral-Lisan. The lesson then continues with the detailed division of the tongue and teeth and their respective articulation points. 📖 Lesson 3 — Qaida Tamheed-ul-Quran 🎙️ Qari Fazal-ur-Rahman Al-Haqqani 📚 Topic: Makharij al-Huruf — Articulation Points of the Quranic Letters
