Madeley Court is a Grade II* listed Tudor manor house built in 1553 by Sir Robert Brooke, who was Speaker of the House of Commons. It was constructed on the site of a 13th-century monastic grange previously owned by Wenlock Priory.
His son, John Brooke, expanded and renovated the house in the late 16th century, adding notable features like the grand Elizabethan gatehouse and a large formal garden with an intricate stone sundial. In the early 18th century, industrialist Abraham Darby I rented the property while developing his coke-smelting process nearby.
By the 19th and 20th centuries, the house fell into disrepair due to surrounding mining operations, but it was restored in the 1970s and 80s and operated as a hotel for many years.
