The Gràcia neighbourhood (*Barri de Gràcia*) began as an independent village named Santa Maria de Gràcia, founded in the 17th century around a Carmelite convent. For centuries, it remained a quiet rural community composed of farmland, religious institutions, and small hamlets just north of Barcelona's city walls. During the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, Gràcia transformed rapidly into a bustling working-class town, driven by textiles, crafts, and political activism. It officially became an independent municipality in 1850. However, as Barcelona expanded through the grid layout of the Eixample district, Gràcia was annexed by the city in 1897. Despite joining Barcelona, Gràcia preserved its narrow streets, vibrant plazas, and distinct community spirit.
