Maliko Run With Frank | Maui, Hawaii | Sup Foil Downwinding

What a journey… After hanging around Maui for a week or so, doing everything but Down Wind, I managed to do my first Maliko run! Maybe a week before this I did a reverse Kihei run, apparently a very unusual run as it goes against the Tradewinds somewhat. This was my first actual run in Hawaii. I did it with Kane De Wilde, Gabriella Bella, Ron, and ? This run I kept for myself no filming. All I say was it was intense conditions and the overall situation of first Down Winder in Hawaii and no idea what to expect! But let’s talk about this run my first Maliko! There were so many unknowns… you have stories about Hawaii huge waves huge fish, huge ocean lore! So drenched in history and wonder! Mix that in with Down Winding… a new environment… unknown water, unknown wind, unknown expertise needed… there was a lot of apprehension stress and expectation! I was so lucky having Frank be so accommodating! Him willing to downwind with a potential kook for 20 km. I take Down Wind serious, I take the ocean serious, and I’m definitely gonna take Hawaii serious, so I hunted as much information as possible. So much so that I think some of the locals were scared to take me out as the impression I put up was that of a total beginner… But that’s what I want I wanna know what it would be like as a total beginner out there. I want to be told all the bits! Was it overkill? Maybe… but surely it’s better to be safe than sorry, and I don’t mind being a Kook for a moment to save being a kook forever! Anyway, my preparations put me in good stead for success and success it was! What a run! So much magic! I will leave some magic and won’t go into all the micros as you’ve just watched the video and can probably understand. Both Frank and I aced the run, and amazingly travelled at a similar speed. He was using the thousand fireball and I was using two sizes up the 1160 fireball and a much bigger stabiliser. Both Frank and I are a very similar weight to. Watching the footage I can see him travelling further than me and this will be a big part of how we finish together. Still… Interesting that this is possible. This is big wave season in Hawaii and I’ve seen some big ones since I’ve been here, the big wind season is still around the corner. That doesn’t mean that there’s no wind and luckily we are getting some regular wind right now mixed in with some good size swells!!! This makes for some exciting Down Winding!
