But the story of this powerful conqueror did not end on a battlefield against a foreign enemy. It ended with Qutayba standing in the Ferghana Valley, surrounded by his own army. We follow his campaigns through Bukhara and Samarkand, his expansion toward Khwarazm, Tashkent, and Ferghana, and the enormous territory his forces brought under their control. But then everything changed. The death of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and Caliph al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik transformed the political situation. A new caliph, Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik, came to power and ordered Qutayba to be brought to Damascus. Qutayba refused to simply surrender his position. He declared his independence and asked his commanders to stand with him. But after years of campaigning far from home, his army was exhausted. Rebellion broke out within his own ranks. In 96 AH / 715 CE, Qutayba ibn Muslim was killed in the Ferghana Valley by his own soldiers. This is the story of one of the most dramatic rises and falls in the history of the early Islamic conquests.
