28 October 1599. On the Cibin plain below Sibiu, Michael the Brave meets Prince Andrew Báthory. At nine o'clock a burning bush gives the signal, the ranks roll down the slopes and the guns begin to roar. Michael's line breaks, he rides into the rout and turns it, and by three in the afternoon Andrew flees the field. Forty-five guns are left in the empty camp. Days later Michael rides into Alba Iulia, the first step on the road to uniting the Romanian lands.
Anno Heroum tells one true battle per song. This is Șelimbăr.

📜 Lyrics
(Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!)
(Mi-hai!)
Over the passes comes October's host
Mountain men rise, riding at our side
Out of his city Andrew marches forth
Down by Sibiu the field lies open wide
Hosts in sight at break of day
Only steel will have its say
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Three banners down, their bearers die
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Cannon and blade, to war! To war!
(Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!)
Ride at dawn!
Dawn at Șelimbăr, the Cibin plain
Nine o'clock: a bush is set ablaze
Down roll our ranks, the cannons start to roar
Through smoke they charge, and steel on steel we meet
Every banner raised on high
Forward now, we charge, we ride
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Three banners down, their bearers die
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Cannon and blade, to war! To war!
(Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!) (Hey!)
Hold the line!
Three times their war-cry roars across the plain
Lázár falls to Novac, mountain blades
Wave on wave they hurl against our line
Charged, our line falls back to thorn and wood
Broken, the line runs! (Ha!)
Into the rout he rides (Ha!)
Turn and stand your ground! (Ha!)
Nobody gives chase (Ha!)
From vineyard heights Prince Andrew watched it all
Near three o'clock he turned his horse and fled
Their own commander yields his sword instead
And Sibiu hauls its men up over walls
Up in the mountains, moon up high
Village axe ends Andrew's way
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Three banners down, their bearers die
Mihai! Swords to the morning sky
Cannon and blade, to war! To war!
The battle won, we raise a cross
And on one hill we lay our dead
Then north we ride, the gates swing wide
Mihai rides in at break of day
And all the square cries out his name!
📖 History notes
Date: 28 October 1599 (Gregorian; 18 October in the old Julian calendar).
Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul), Prince of Wallachia, against Andrew Báthory, Prince of Transylvania.
Army sizes vary widely between sources, so no exact numbers are claimed here.
45 guns were captured in Andrew's camp; the fallen were buried in a common mound.
Andrew was killed days later by Székely villagers in the Csík mountains; on 1 November Michael entered Alba Iulia.
The union of 1600 did not happen at Șelimbăr, but this battle opened the road to it.
