Taiwan Railways's electric multiple unit series (EMU train) EMU500 local trains traction system comparison!! EMU500 is train operated by Taiwan Railways from 1995 to present. In the early 1990s, Taiwan Railways began to operate a local train. At the same time, the number of EMU400s that are also local trains is not enough, so Taiwan Railways Administration ordered 344 vehicles (86 sets) EMU500s from Daewoo, South Korea. The EMU500 has excellent acceleration performance and ranks first among all trains operated by the Taiwan Railways. It has better acceleration performance than any train, including EMU800, EMU900 and EMU3000. Therefore, EMU500 has the title of "The King of Acceleration Performance" in Taiwan railways. The "GTO-VVVF" (Gate Turn-Off Thyristor - Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) system is represents a critical milestone in the evolution of electric traction technology. As one of the earliest implementations of power electronics in train propulsion, GTO-VVVF emerged in the 1980s and became widely adopted in metro systems and heavy rail applications. Key advantages include robust power handling for heavy trains and cost-effective manufacturing due to simpler semiconductor fabrication compared to later technologies. However, GTOs require complex snubber circuits to manage voltage spikes during switching, increasing system bulk. Their low switching frequency (300-500Hz) generates significant harmonics, necessitating large filters and resulting in audible motor whine – a characteristic sound of 1990s-era trains. While modern IGBT systems have largely replaced GTO technology, its introduction proved the viability of AC traction motors over traditional DC systems, paving the way for today's energy-efficient rail transport. Many legacy systems still operate with GTO-VVVF, demonstrating its remarkable durability despite higher energy losses (~7-10%) compared to contemporary solutions. The "IGBT-VVVF" (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor - Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) system has become the cornerstone of contemporary electric train propulsion, offering unprecedented efficiency and control. Since its widespread adoption in the late 1990s, IGBT-VVVF has revolutionized rail transport by addressing the limitations of earlier GTO-based systems while introducing new capabilities. Operating at switching frequencies of 1-5 kHz (10x higher than GTO systems), IGBT-VVVF generates significantly fewer harmonics, eliminating the characteristic motor whine and reducing filter requirements. The system's pulse-width modulation (PWM) enables precise control of three-phase AC output, allowing for smoother acceleration profiles and improved ride comfort. Key advantages include 95-98% power conversion efficiency (a 5-8% improvement over GTO systems) and compact, modular designs due to eliminated snubber circuits. IGBT's self-protecting capability against short circuits and overloads enhances system reliability, while its wider operating temperature range (-40°C to +150°C) ensures performance in diverse environments. Modern implementations integrate real-time diagnostics and regenerative braking, recovering up to 30% of energy during deceleration. As the current industry standard, IGBT-VVVF dominates applications from high-speed rail to metro systems. Its success has further propelled the development of next-generation SiC (silicon carbide)-VVVF systems, continuing the evolution of efficient rail traction technology. 0:00 Start 0:57 GTO-VVVF EMU500 departing from Museum of Fine Arts Station.
