The story of Kim Dong Chul, an ordinary American pastor who worked as a CIA spy for six years in North Korea—the world's most secretive and dangerous country—is a truly thrilling tale. He invested his entire life savings of $2.6 million to build the "Tumong Hotel" in a foreign, unpredictable land. He won the government's trust over the years by providing jobs to local workers, feeding the poor, and distributing free medicine to nearby villages. The CIA's Entry Right around this time, the CIA approached him. They convinced him that he was uniquely positioned to gather military secrets inside North Korea. Having witnessed the suffering of the North Korean people firsthand, Kim agreed to become a spy. During his business trips to China, the CIA trained him in espionage techniques—like using dead drops, secret cameras, and Morse code—and assigned him the codename "Antenna". To gather intelligence, Kim capitalized on North Korea's collapsing economy. He targeted frustrated, underpaid military officers, customs agents, and drivers, bribing them with cash. Within two years, he successfully recruited 12 informants, building a massive spy network. In 2011, he proved his worth to the CIA by bribing a North Korean nuclear scientist to obtain a 99.99% pure zinc piece related to their nuclear program, successfully smuggling it into China. Suspicion and Arrest As his network grew, so did the danger. North Korean counter-intelligence started observing his unusually close interactions with government officials, his unnecessary questioning of locals, and his keen interest in a nearby naval base. His situation worsened in 2014 when a government construction crew demolished a part of his hotel without permission. Furious, Kim caused a public scene, threatening suicide on the streets. Such behavior is not tolerated in North Korea, and this outburst made him a prime target for heavy surveillance. Finally, in October 2015, the operation came to a crashing halt. While leaving a political anniversary event, an informant intentionally handed him a USB drive and secret papers in public. The counter-espionage team, who had been waiting for him, immediately surrounded and arrested him. Torture and Release Kim was blindfolded, taken to a secret location, and subjected to brutal torture. He was deprived of sleep and food, had his fingers crushed under boots, and was given electric shocks. Unable to bear the agony, he attempted suicide by inhaling toxic gas, but the guards saved him, vowing to keep him alive to suffer. He was eventually forced to confess to his crimes on national television. Trying to save as many people as he could, he only gave up six lower-ranking names from his network. Those six were executed, and Kim was sentenced to 10 years of hard labor in 2016. After enduring grueling conditions—inhaling toxic chemicals and carrying heavy loads in a labor camp—his health deteriorated severely, and he lost a massive amount of weight. Finally, in 2018, as a result of diplomatic talks between the US and North Korea, Kim was handed back to the United States after 31 months of hellish captivity.
