What Africa Taught Us 🇿🇦 One videographer. One photographer. Two Black Americans who traveled to South Africa to document the work happening there, but our lives were forever changed in the process. Growing up in America, much of what we knew about Africa came from television, and the images we saw were often centered around poverty, struggle, and suffering. We quickly realized that the small window we had been given was nowhere near the full picture. South Africa showed us beauty, culture, community, innovation, faith, history, and connection. We went there to capture other people’s stories, but somehow Africa spoke to our own. We came home with healing, clarity, and a deeper connection to where we come from. To our fellow African Americans: go see South Africa for yourself. Don’t allow television or someone else’s perspective to be your only window into Africa. Experience the people. Experience the culture. Experience the beauty. Then come home and tell five more people what you saw. We went to document South Africa.
