It is much easier to see what needs to change around us than to admit what needs to change in us. I can recognize my own impatience, pride, anger or unwillingness to forgive. I can know that something in my heart is wrong and genuinely want it to be different. But knowing what needs to change and being able to change it are not always the same thing. That is where *Holy Spirit, Start With Me* begins. “Father, You have mapped my soul Even rooms I kept concealed Walls I built to keep me guarded Pain I never brought to You” There are things we can hide from other people. There are things we can even avoid facing ourselves. But nothing in us is hidden from God. That can be uncomfortable, especially when we have spent years defending something, holding onto hurt, trying to stay in control or telling ourselves that this is simply who we are. The prayer in this song is not, “God, show me what everybody else is doing wrong.” It is: “Holy Spirit, move within Heal the depths where no one sees.” Sometimes I know exactly what needs to be different in me and still discover that willpower is not enough. I can promise myself I will be more patient and still lose my temper. I can tell myself I have forgiven someone and then feel the old hurt return. I can say that I trust God while still trying to control everything I cannot predict. I can want to become more like Jesus and still find parts of myself resisting Him. That is why this song is a prayer rather than a promise to try harder. “Jesus, make me more like You Father, let Your will be done Keep transforming me Change the way I live my life” Following Jesus has to reach further than the things we say we believe. It reaches the way we speak when we are angry. The way we treat someone who has hurt us. The things we refuse to surrender. The fear we keep carrying. The parts of ourselves we would rather God leave alone. Real change can be difficult because sometimes the heart we are asking God to change is stubborn. The final prayer of this song admits exactly that: “Don’t only change the world outside Or only what my eyes can see If You change just one thing Break this stubborn heart of mine” That line is the reason this song is called Holy Spirit, Start With Me. Before I ask God to change everything around me, I want to be willing to let Him deal with what is happening inside me. Not because I can remake myself through enough effort.
