Everyone knows the 2JZ-GTE from dyno sheets. But the story that made it famous isn't the one that explains it. Follow the plumbing to turbo number two and you find a small actuator can with a rod holding a passage shut — the second turbo is physically part of the engine, and at the start of boosted operation, its air is not allowed inside.
This engine didn't begin under a Supra hood. It entered production in the 1991 Toyota Aristo, a luxury sedan, whose launch material told you exactly what the staging was for. Toyota described a "two-way twin turbo" built to deliver response at low speed and flow at high speed — with acceleration as smooth as a naturally aspirated engine.
This is the factory machine inside the famous machine. Walk the four controlled objects — the exhaust bypass, the exhaust-gas control, the intake-air control gate, and the wastegate — plus the VSVs, the pressure tank, and the actuator rods that physically move the valves. Using Toyota's own 1998 service manual, not forum arithmetic, I'll show you why the second turbo never woke up — it was being made ready.
