What happens when a practice with 6,000 patients and 21 people on payroll walks away from insurance? Deanna Woodroffe knows, because she did it.
Deanna is a board-certified women's health nurse practitioner and the owner of Vibrant Health of Colorado, a multi-specialty practice with locations near Denver and in Eagle offering primary care, gynecology, hormone therapy, and functional medicine under one roof. She has been prescribing hormones for more than 20 years, and for most of that time she was fiercely committed to taking insurance. Her reason goes back to a moment at 21, sitting in a functional medicine practitioner's parking lot, crying because she finally had answers and couldn't afford them.
In this episode, Deanna walks Jody through the entire switch to a membership model, including the parts most people leave out. She shares what finally forced the decision (burned-out providers managing 6,000 patients each, and Medicare pulling telehealth with almost no notice), the six months of daily prep before announcing, and the terrifying stretch when sign-ups stalled for nearly three months. She talks candidly about handling angry patients and brutal online comments, taking a pay cut to keep her team intact, and why she now has to market for the first time ever.
And the other side? Hour-long visits, calling patients the day after an appointment, real vacations, and providers who feel passionate about medicine again.
