Dr. Lamin Manneh has defended the United Democratic Party’s decision to withdraw from the ongoing opposition coalition talks, arguing that the party acted in the best interest of its supporters and the wider Gambian population. Speaking on AG Radio’s Tuesday Civic Engagement Programme, Dr. Manneh said the UDP remains committed to democratic change and national unity despite its decision to leave the coalition process. He maintained that withdrawing from the talks should not be interpreted as a rejection of cooperation with other political forces seeking a change of government. According to him, the UDP entered the discussions in good faith but could not continue participating in a process that appeared inconsistent with its principles, expectations and vision for the country. He stressed that political alliances must be based on mutual respect, transparency, fairness and clearly agreed rules. Dr. Manneh also pledged that a UDP-led government, should the party win the December presidential election, would be broad-based and inclusive. He said competent Gambians from different political parties, regions, ethnic groups and professional backgrounds would be given opportunities to contribute to national development. He emphasised that the UDP’s objective is not merely to win political power but to establish a government that represents all Gambians, including citizens who may not support the party. Dr. Manneh further called on UDP supporters to remain united, disciplined and focused as the country approaches the election. He expressed confidence that the party has the structures, experience and nationwide support required to compete successfully and offer Gambians a credible alternative government.
