Pick up a jar of pasta sauce, one of the big names, and turn it over. The first ingredient says "tomato puree." Then a pair of brackets. Inside them, two words: water, tomato paste. It's still tomato. It's just not the tomato on the front of the jar.
In this video we read the front, the ingredient list and the company line on 9 jars and cans, counting down from mildly misleading to hard to defend: #9 Great Value Traditional, #8 Good & Gather Traditional, #7 Newman's Own Marinara, #6 Bertolli Tomato & Basil, #5 Classico Traditional Sweet Basil, #4 Ragú Old World Style, #3 Hunt's Traditional, #2 Prego Traditional and #1 Primal Kitchen Organic Tomato Basil.
#9 Great Value: tomato puree with water and tomato paste in the brackets, and what the federal code says about puree and paste.
#8 Good & Gather: nearly the same list as the Walmart jar, and "and/or" oils.
#7 Newman's Own: a real cause, zero added sugar, and the same first line.
#6 Bertolli: "Since 1865" on the front, a Mount Prospect, Illinois company on the back.
#5 Classico: "made with real ingredients" and a sweet basil with the basil under two percent.
#4 Ragú Old World Style: two different ingredient lists for the same jar, and a 2019 FDA recall record.
#3 Hunt's Traditional: "premium" on the ribbon, plain water as the second ingredient.
#2 Prego Traditional: "Italian sauce" on the front, sugar third, and the company that also owns Rao's.
#1 Primal Kitchen: the most expensive of the nine, with the same brackets on the second line.
Along the way: six jars in this video belong to just three companies, and in two of those three pairs, only one label prints the company's name.
Then we show you three jars whose first line is just tomatoes: Michael's of Brooklyn, Lucini Italia Organic Tuscan Tomato Sauce and Rao's Homemade Marinara. Each one has an honest downside, and we tell you what it is.
The rule: Read the first line. Is it "tomatoes," or "tomato puree (water, tomato paste)"?
