This lovely walk takes us along a section of the Shropshire Union Canal that cuts straight through the city of Chester in Cheshire, England. We begin our walk in the beautiful Abbey Square which sits alongside the stunning Grade I listed Chester Cathedral. The lovely cobbled road and Georgian houses of Abbey Street lead us up onto the Grade I listed Roman Walls, which are some of the best preserved in the country. From here we get to see the full size of the Cathedral as well as the medieval watch-tower known as Phoenix Tower or King Charles Tower, named after King Charles I who, in 1645, watched the battle of Rowton Moor from this tower. Leaving the walls we head down to the canal and join it at the section that opened in 1779 which follows the city walls for quite a distance. The enormous job of cutting out the canal was carried out by men using basic equipment such as hand tools, wheel barrows and planks as well as horses and carts. This impressive area is known as Northgate Cutting and passes under the tall Northgate bridge which is a popular location for tourists to stop, take pictures and look down from above. Behind it is another tall but slimmer stone arched bridge known as the Bridge Of Sighs. Built around 1793 this crossing led from Northgate Gaol to the chapel for condemned prisoners to receive their last rites before execution. Named after the sighs of the prisoners who knew their fate as they crossed it, it originally had railings on to prevent them from escaping. The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England and is Grade II listed. The Northgate locks lift the boats 33 feet from the basin up to below the city walls. Originally they were called the Water Tower Locks. We finish our walk in the large Chester Canal Basin which has the Grade II listed Telford Warehouse building. Now converted into a pub and restaurant this impressive warehouse was the idea of the famous industrial engineer Thomas Telford.
