One stretch of the San Andreas fault has been shaking almost non-stop for days. Beneath Pinnacles National Park in central California, roughly 59 earthquakes struck in six days — nearly seven times the normal rate — capped by a magnitude 3.94, the biggest event there in almost 15 years. On the raw numbers these are small quakes, and no agency has issued any warning. So why does it matter?
Because it's happening on the "creeping" section of the San Andreas — the ~150 km stretch that slides continuously instead of locking up, the part scientists have long treated as a barrier that a great earthquake could never cross. In this video we break down what's actually happening, why this swarm behaves so strangely (it grew larger over time, spread along the fault, and reached near the surface), and the borehole study that complicates the whole picture. A team drilled more than 3 km into the fault at Parkfield and, in just 4 meters of rock, found chemical fingerprints of 100+ past major earthquakes on the section that "can't" produce one.
We give both sides honestly: what the discovery means, what it doesn't, and why the quiet, locked stretches of the San Andreas — not this noisy one — are the ones that actually keep seismologists up at night. Plus the incredible story of how this fault sliced an entire volcanic field in half and carried the pieces 195 miles (314 km) apart over 23 million years.
