Parts of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Cwmbran remain completely empty, despite it being 21 October 2006 and well into the autumn season. Following an exceptionally hot and dry summer, water levels across the canal have struggled to recover due to a lack of significant rainfall during much of the autumn. Sections that would normally be replenished by seasonal weather continue to show exposed canal beds and reduced water levels.
Residents and visitors have raised concerns about the condition of the canal, with some pointing to years, or even decades, of neglect by Torfaen Council as a contributing factor. Critics argue that inadequate maintenance and long-term underinvestment have left parts of the historic waterway increasingly vulnerable during periods of prolonged dry weather. The situation has highlighted wider questions about the management and preservation of one of South Wales' most important canals, which remains a popular attraction for walkers, anglers and local communities.
