August 1988. A county fair in Quitman, Texas. Four teenagers were about to lose the biggest gig of their lives when their guitar player collapsed ten minutes before showtime. Their seventeen-year-old singer grabbed a bullhorn and begged the crowd: "Can anybody here play guitar?"
A skinny stranger in a canvas jacket set down his plate of brisket and walked up to the stage. Nobody recognized him, until he played the first lick of Pride and Joy.
What he did for that band, and for one girl whose daddy had lost everything, is a story the town still tells.
