They Added $800 to a Soaked Stranger's Bill — The Waitress Who Warned Him Didn't Know Who He Was
She had eleven dollars to last until Friday, two write-ups in her file, and a soaked stranger at table nine that nobody else would serve.
So she brought him bread. Then she looked at his bill and saw eight hundred dollars that didn't exist on it — a line the manager had been adding for nineteen months, to guests who looked like they wouldn't come back.
She wrote eleven words on a slip of paper and slid it across his table.
She was terminated at 11:47 that night. Apron and badge on the desk, out through the service door in the rain.
Nineteen people in that building knew about the padded bills. She was the only one who said anything, and she was the one who paid for it.
The next morning the man in the ruined coat came back through the front doors in a tailored suit, and the lobby found out who had been sitting at table nine.
Watch to the end — the last thing he hands her isn't money.
