In two years, the cheapest Mac mini went from $599 to $899, and the part that rose the most is memory. Is 16GB still enough in the AI era? Should you jump to 32GB, or just buy the M5 Pro? No benchmarks here, just one question: based on how you use AI, where should your money go?
Three rules for choosing a Mac mini in the AI era:
1. First, figure out where your AI runs: in the cloud, or on your own computer
2. Then make sure the memory is enough: you can never add more later
3. Only then look at the chip and the price

Notes
Prices are a US snapshot from late October 2026. Used and refurbished prices are estimated ranges; check current prices before you buy.
Local-model memory figures use the rule of thumb of about 0.5–0.6GB per billion parameters at 4-bit quantization. They are estimates, not measurements.
