Prince Khusrau Mirza was once one of the strongest possible heirs to the Mughal throne. He was the eldest son of Emperor Jahangir, the grandson of Akbar the Great, and a prince supported by some of the most powerful nobles in the empire. But in 1606, Khusrau rebelled against his own father. He escaped Agra, gathered thousands of followers, marched toward Lahore, and attempted to challenge Jahangir for control of the Mughal Empire. The rebellion failed. Khusrau was captured, brought before his father in chains, and imprisoned. Jahangir refused to execute his son. Yet after another alleged conspiracy, Khusrau was subjected to a punishment intended to destroy his chances of ever becoming emperor: he was blinded. Even then, the danger did not disappear. Khusrau remained popular among sections of the Mughal nobility, while his younger brother Prince Khurram, the future Shah Jahan, continued to see him as a possible rival. Years later, Khusrau died under suspicious circumstances while under Khurram’s custody, with several contemporary accounts suggesting that his death was no accident.
