The U.S. Geological Survey puts the chance of another magnitude 9 earthquake on the Cascadia coast in the next 50 years at 10 to 15 percent - about 1 in 7 at the top. Where does that number come from, and what would the first minutes look like?
We follow the real records - the USGS 2025 fact sheet, a tsunami that hit Japan in January 1700, tree rings and buried marsh soil, Oregon's 2013 resilience plan and new University of Washington seafloor data - to separate what is measured, what is modeled and what nobody knows.
