POV: You are a 19-year-old American soldier fighting in World War II. Before the war, you worked the letterpress in your family's print shop, setting type for wedding announcements and the county's small weekly paper. After receiving your draft letter, you leave your family and the shop behind—only to find yourself dug into the freezing forests of the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, December 1944.
This immersive World War II story takes you from training in America to England, across to the European front, and into the brutal winter siege of Bastogne, where a surrounded American force holds the line against a massive German counteroffensive.
But this is not only a story about weapons, battles, and military strategy.
It is the story of your father's letterpress key you carry in your pocket, Sal's harmonica, Sergeant Reyes's final order, and the friends you are forced to leave behind. As the German assault presses in and supplies run out, you experience the fear, exhaustion, moral uncertainty, friendship, loss, and psychological damage faced by ordinary soldiers.
And even if you survived the war, could you ever truly leave it behind?
