Why shake an entire building when engineers can already calculate how it should respond? Japan's E-Defense facility brings real structures, connections and contents into a controlled full-scale test.
We explore the hydraulic shake table, the importance of motion in different directions, and the way a building's components interact. Full-scale experiments can expose behaviour that is difficult to capture with a simplified model, including the response of nonstructural elements. Historical tests provide concrete examples of what researchers can learn.
A successful specimen is evidence about that structure and those test conditions. It is not a universal certificate that a building is earthquake-proof. This documentary explains what E-Defense can reveal, how physical tests complement calculations, and why earthquake magnitude alone cannot describe what happens to a particular building.
