The tall gentleman at the top of the assembly-room stairs has been asked his name, and he does not give it. The master of ceremonies waits with his pen over the book. Behind the double doors the fiddles have begun, and the long room is full of people who have come to look at one man: the Absent Duke of Aldermere, home after twenty years.
On the bench by the stair-head sits a very tall young woman in cream silk, with her aunt's old ivory fan in her lap. She has been waiting an hour for a partner she has never seen. She looks at the stranger's height, and his fine coat, and the way he stands, as if the whole room were about to turn round and stare at him. Then she gets up. "Never mind his name. He's with me. My aunt engaged him for the evening."
Hannah Ashdown is twenty-five. For eight years she has sat on the bench by the wall at every assembly in that room, ever since a captain led her to the top of the set at seventeen and walked away from her before the music began. Tonight she gives a duke his orders as if he were a hired man, and he obeys every one. He could tell her who he is in one sentence. He plays the part all night, and all summer, and never tells her. What Hannah does not know is why a duke would answer to another man's name for a girl from the wall.
This is a story about an ivory fan with one snapped stick, a bench under the third window, a sister-in-law in rose-pink silk, a back parlour with a mulberry outside the door, a refusal rehearsed all summer, and a master of ceremonies who has kept the same door for thirty years.
There is no music. Only one voice and one long summer, told from the first dance to the last.
