Africa is rich in natural resources, but why is Africa still poor? In Part 2 of this series, we take a deeper look at the resource curse in Africa and ask a difficult question: can the resource curse theory explain why Africa is poor? From gold, diamonds, oil, bauxite and manganese to other valuable natural resources, Africa has enormous wealth beneath its soil. Yet many resource-rich countries continue to struggle with poverty, unemployment, inequality, corruption and underdevelopment. In this video, I explore how the resource curse works, why having abundant natural resources does not automatically create prosperity, and the role of governments, institutions, foreign companies, local communities and economic policies.
