You read about Logen Ninefingers tough inner journey, winced with Glokta, and witnessed the rise of Jezal dan Luther. But after you closed The Last Argument of Kings, did you realize the real bad guy wasn't a barbarian or a king, it was a banker?
In this video essay, SPOILER-FILLED for the original First Law trilogy, I dive deep into the question the books pose: What if Gandalf was an Evil Banker? Joe Abercrombie crafted a world where ancient magic is giving way to a new, far more insidious power: unchecked institutional greed.
I do my best in this video to pull back the curtain on the institutions of the Union to expose how they are designed to consolidate power for the noble houses, not unlike systems we see in our own world. Specifically breaking down the terrifying power of Valint and Balk, the banking house that holds the Union’s people hostage through debt, blackmail, and betrayal.
I hope to show you the surprising real-world historical parallels Abercrombie weaves into the story, from the Global Financial Crisis to economic policies of the 80s, revealing Bayaz's plot as a tale of profit leveraged from chaos.
Beyond the cynicism, this video explores the genuine hope found in the small acts of grace and leadership that prove humanity can shine even under the boot heel of institutional evil.
If you loved the first trilogy and appreciate dark fantasy that holds a mirror up to our modern world, this essay is a must-watch. I’m sticking strictly to The First Law trilogy and avoiding spoilers for the later standalones and the Age of Madness trilogy, making this safe for anyone currently in between series.
