Once you leave the main roads and enter the hutongs, the space quickly narrows. Gray-brick courtyard walls, old trees, low-rise homes, and parked vehicles feel especially quiet beneath the warm streetlights. Around Nanchizi and Donghuamen, old buildings, courtyard gates, and mature trees appear one after another; farther toward Dong’anmen, restaurants, bright signs, and nighttime foot traffic gradually become more noticeable. The walk shifts from quiet old hutongs beside the Forbidden City to livelier streets, with courtyards, tree-lined lanes, traffic, and nighttime businesses constantly changing along the way.
