This time we are digging into the double wired 5 speed hub Sachs Torpedo Pentasport. I believe many bikes with this hub was in the end abandoned due to a broken gear shifter which were so expensive that people gave up on the whole bike. If the gear shifter breaks down there are some options to extend the life time of the hub without buying a new original gear shifter. One option is to continue with the bike as a 3 speed by mounting a 3 speed gear shifter that actuates the wire on the right side. This will give use of gear 2-4. If you then add a second gear shifter that can actuate the left side wire, then you can also reach the lowest and highest gears (1 and 5) by pulling the left pull chain when in gear 2 and 4 respectively. For the bike in this video the original gear shifter was semi broken. The right wire could be actuated but not the left wire. So in my case with this bike I keep the original gear shifter but only to actuate the right wire in three positions (gear 2-4). Then I add a grip shifter on the left side of the handle bar to actuate the left wire and thereby also reach gear 1 and 5. This bike was donated to me for free (together with two other bikes) by a sweet old lady who was cleaning up around the house. The bikes came with the house that she bought 2010 and the bikes have been parked outside but under roof since then. This type of bike with a double wired 5 speed Pentasport was the first new bike my parents bought for me around the age of twelve so it was some nostalgic vibes working on this bike.
