Today’s story was shared with me by a woman named Maryam. Her father was a welder, and her mother made bangles at home—decorating them with stones before selling them. Maryam had two younger brothers and a sister named Deeba. Maryam was married outside the family to a man named Ayub; both her husband and mother-in-law were quarrelsome, and her husband did not earn any income. Maryam began doing handicraft work at home—decorating and selling bangles, a skill she had learned from her mother. She continued to serve her husband and mother-in-law, and they had two children. While Maryam’s own parents and brothers provided her with financial support, her husband, Ayub, would instead take money from her for his own expenses. Meanwhile, Maryam’s younger sister, Deeba, reached university and became engaged. Her fiancé taught her online trading, through which she began earning a good income and even provided financial help to Maryam. One day, a cousin of Ayub—named Idrees—saw Deeba and took an interest in her. Ayub’s uncle asked Ayub to pressure his wife, Maryam, to break off Deeba’s engagement and arrange her marriage to Idrees instead. Initially, Maryam was deeply distressed and refused, but eventually, unable to withstand the pressure from her in-laws and husband, she brought the matter to her parents. Her parents were alarmed and refused, but Ayub issued an ultimatum: if Deeba did not marry Idrees, he would divorce Maryam. Compelled by the situation, the engagement was broken, and Deeba was married to Idrees. After the wedding, Deeba discovered that her husband and mother-in-law were cruel people—she was not even permitted to use the air conditioner. Deeba had entered into this marriage out of compulsion, in order to... While trying to help establish a stable home for Maryam, Deeba found herself suffering immensely. She was bearing the entire financial burden of the household. One day, Idrees humiliated his wife severely, and his mother—Maryam’s mother-in-law—also spoke to Deeba in a very harsh and hurtful manner. Already exhausted by the cruel behavior of her in-laws, Deeba decided to seek a divorce from Idrees. Deeba had previously broken off her own engagement to marry Idrees—a sacrifice made to ensure Maryam’s marriage remained intact—but now, she herself was suffering from severe depression. Ayub issued an ultimatum: if Deeba divorced Idrees, he would divorce Maryam. Consequently, following Deeba’s divorce, Maryam was also divorced; she returned to her father’s home with her two children. Six months later, Deeba’s former fiancé reached out to her, and they got married. Meanwhile, Maryam remains divorced to this day, raising her two children alone. Maryam was entirely blameless, yet she is being punished for a "sin" she never committed. We must change our attitudes.
