Mugu Peak Trail is a prominent 1,260-foot summit located in the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area of Southern California. The trailhead is located right off the Pacific Coast Highway in Point Mugu State Park, roughly a 15-mile drive south of Oxnard or a scenic coastal drive from Malibu.

🥾 THE HIKE DETAILED IN THIS VIDEO:
Mugu Peak Trail. Filmed October 11, 2026.
Stats from the day:
📍 Distance: About 2.9 miles (loop option)
📍 Elevation Gain: ~1,250 feet
📍 Time on Trail: ~2.5 hours
📍 Timeline: Started just after sunrise to catch the crisp morning ocean breeze and see the trail completely illuminated by the early morning light before heading back down.
The Mugu Peak Trail serves up a serious cardio challenge right from the gate. Starting from the PCH at the Chumash Trailhead, the path launches into a steep, sustained incline. While there are tight switchbacks to help navigate the vertical push, the loose dirt and gravel still make it a real calf-burning climb. As you work your way up the ridge and pause to catch your breath, look back across the highway. You will catch a fantastic bird's-eye view of Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu and the Seabees military training grounds stretching out with the deep blue Pacific Ocean framing the entire backdrop.
Just when you think your legs are about to give out, the trail introduces you to the mental game of false summits. When you clear the first major ridge line, the hidden La Jolla Valley suddenly bursts into frame. Watching the expansive golden valley floor open up under the dramatic sunrise light is absolutely incredible, but it creates a classic happy-sad moment. Right as you are celebrating the beautiful view of the valley, you look to your right and realize you are not done yet. Standing between you and the actual peak is a brutal final push with a steep 40% grade.
It is a tough test of patience and stamina on that last vertical wall, but keeping your head down and pushing through is completely worth it. At the top, you are greeted by an iconic American flag and a summit register to sign. The 360-degree panoramic views up there offer sweeping lookouts over the coast, the Oxnard Plain, the Boney Mountains, and the Channel Islands off the coast. We completed the loop by taking the more gradual dirt road descent, winding past the native grasslands of the La Jolla Valley Natural Preserve with continuous coastal views on the way back down.
🗺️ EXTENDING THE ROUTE:
While we did the classic ~3-mile loop, you can easily turn this into a much longer day hike. If you want to log more miles, you can connect the Mugu Peak trail to the broader La Jolla Valley loop network, heading deeper into the preserve toward the La Jolla Canyon Trail or combining it with the Ray Miller Trail for a challenging 10+ mile coastal trek.
