Consider the four subjects for a moment.
Names. The most personal thing a human being possesses — the first lie told about you, arguably, since nobody consults you on the matter. Rodents. Small, numerous, adaptable, and now about to be comprehensively misrepresented on national radio. Death. The one subject every human being has a stake in and precisely zero firsthand experience of. And Chocolate. Which has been here since the beginning, quietly judging everything, asking only to be eaten and not discussed inaccurately on BBC Radio 4.
These four subjects share a programme the way strangers share a waiting room — proximity without obvious connection, each one carrying its own weight, each one about to be systematically lied about by panellists who have prepared their lectures with the thoroughness of people who have done anything but thorough research. The game, as always, is simple: everything is false except five things. The truths are hidden between the misinformation like raisins in a fruitcake — present, identifiable if you look carefully enough, and slightly surprising every time you find one.
Names reveal etymological secrets that linguists have apparently been withholding. Rodents scurry through a lecture that owes more to imagination than zoology. Death is approached with the cheerful academic detachment of people who have made their peace with it or simply haven't thought about it seriously enough. And Chocolate — dark, complex, storied — receives the kind of historical analysis that the Aztecs would find both flattering and baffling.
Four subjects. Twenty lies between them. Five truths hiding in plain sight. And the particular Unbelievable Truth pleasure of discovering, once again, that the world contains more strangeness than you remembered — and that you still cannot reliably tell the strange truth from the plausible lie.
Why You'll Love This Episode
✔ Names, Rodents, Death and Chocolate — four subjects with no obvious connection and perfect comic chemistry
✔ The Unbelievable Truth format finding fresh, unexpected comedy in the most familiar of subjects
✔ Truths hidden so effectively that finding them feels like a genuine, satisfying discovery
✔ The specific pleasure of being confidently wrong — and then correctly surprised
✔ BBC Radio 4 at its most playfully, reliably, magnificently dishonest
💬 Listener Question: Names, Rodents, Death and Chocolate — which subject do you think is hardest to hide a truth inside, and which panellist's delivery made you trust them least — which, in this game, means they were probably the most successful?
