Teaching, Learning, and Staying Curious with Joy Morin

Joy Morin has been sharing ideas with piano teachers through Color In My Piano since 2009, but her own teaching has continued to evolve right along with the resources she creates. In this episode, Joy and I talk about what she has learned through years of blogging, teaching, reflecting, and experimenting. We get into Music Learning Theory, audiation, Edwin Gordon’s work, Joy’s Keys at Play series, and what it looks like to keep growing as a teacher without feeling like you have to chase every new trend. Joy also shares some exciting composing news, including her work with Alfred Music and her upcoming collection, Starbound, featuring 11 space inspired pieces for early to mid elementary pianists. We talk about: • How Color In My Piano began and how blogging became a form of reflection for Joy • Why teachers do not have to follow every marketing or business trend • Joy’s introduction to Edwin Gordon and Music Learning Theory • What Music Learning Theory actually means • Audiation and developing a student’s inner musicianship • Why MLT can feel like a major shift for traditionally trained teachers • How Keys at Play can serve as a method, supplement, rhythm resource, or sight reading book • Giving students more freedom to explore music • Joy’s composing work with Alfred Music • Her upcoming space themed collection, Starbound • What teaching her own children has taught her about practicing and learning CONNECT WITH JOY + RESOURCES Color In My Piano https://colorinmypiano.com What Is Music Learning Theory, Exactly? https://colorinmypiano.com/2018/01/15...
