Three Japanese carriers died in five minutes at Midway. Between roughly 10:22 and 10:26 on 4 June 1942, American dive bombers put fatal hits into the Kaga, the Soryu and the Akagi, and the striking force that opened the Pacific War would never fight together again. This documentary follows the full chain of events behind the battle: Station HYPO and the "AF is short of water" message, the Coral Sea, the three-day repair of the USS Yorktown, and the ambush set at Point Luck. It covers the A6M2 Zero, the SBD Dauntless, the TBD Devastator and the F4F-4 Wildcat, the torpedo squadrons of the USS Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown, and the morning decisions of Nagumo, Spruance and Fletcher. It then counts what each side lost, from 4 to 7 June 1942, and names four causes. Sources are the after-action reports, loss tables and squadron records, checked against the standard American and Japanese accounts. Where sources disagree, such as the exact minutes of the dive-bomber attacks, this video says so instead of choosing a false precision.
