Gandalf arrives in Dale and seeks an audience with Thranduil, the Elvenking of Mirkwood, who has brought his forces to the Lonely Mountain. Tensions are already high. Thorin Oakenshield has barricaded himself inside Erebor, Bard is rallying the Men of Lake-town, and Thranduil’s army is poised to claim the treasure he believes is owed to his people. Gandalf warns Thranduil that far greater dangers are brewing: orc armies under Azog and Bolg are on the march, and the real enemy, Sauron is moving in the shadows. After Gandalf warns Thranduil about the coming war, the film cuts to a nighttime scene in the mountains. Legolas and Tauriel are tracking Bolg’s forces in Gundabad. They’ve traveled far north, past the ruins of old fortresses, to confirm Gandalf’s fears. From a high vantage point, they spy on the Orcs below — a massive, shadowy army toiling in the mountain passes. The Orcs are digging and preparing for war, their torches flickering in the dark, revealing grotesque siege creatures and trolls in the ranks. The air is cold, the sky is a dark steel-blue, and Howard Shore’s score here is ominous and heavy. Legolas and Tauriel speak in hushed voices about the scale of the threat. It’s here they realize this is not just a small war party. It’s a full-scale invasion force under the command of Bolg, intended to flank the main battle at Erebor by emerging from a hidden route.
