The History Behind "The Sacred War" (Священная война)
Written in June 1941, just days after the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa), "The Sacred War" is widely regarded as one of the most powerful military songs of WWII.
The deeply patriotic lyrics were composed by poet Vasily Lebedev-Kumach upon hearing the news of the invasion, published in national newspapers on June 24, 1941. Moved by the intense urgency of the moment, Alexander Alexandrov (founder of the Alexandrov Ensemble) composed the iconic, solemn music overnight, writing the notes directly on a chalkboard for his choir to memorize.
On June 26, 1941, the song was performed for the first time at Moscow's Belorussky Railway Station as thousands of Soviet soldiers boarded troops trains headed for the frontlines. Witnesses reported that the crowd stood in total, reverent silence before demanding the ensemble repeat the performance five times in a row.
With its dark march rhythm and unyielding emotion, "The Sacred War" became the ultimate anthem of national survival, dark aesthetic resilience, and total war.
Extra: The Sacred War (Священная война) slowed and reverb version with rain atmosphere and dark aesthetic visuals.
