He designed the hat Jackie Kennedy wore to the inauguration. Eleven years later he sold his own name, and he was smiling when he signed.
Roy Halston Frowick was the first American fashion designer to become as famous as the women he dressed. A hat maker from Des Moines, Iowa, who reduced himself to a single word and turned that word into an empire. Jackie Kennedy wore him to the White House. Liza Minnelli and Bianca Jagger wore him to Studio 54. In 1973 he beat the French couture houses at Versailles and walked out the most celebrated designer America had ever produced.
That same year he sold his company. The deal included the trademark. It included the word.
He did not seem to understand what he had done until eleven years later, when the corporation that owned his name shut him out of his own studio. Halston spent the last six years of his life legally barred from designing anything that carried the only name he had used since he was twenty. Perfume he did not blend. Dresses he did not cut. His signature, printed by strangers.
This is the story of what happens when a man turns himself into property.
