The Establishment of the Golden Urn Lot-Drawing System

The reincarnation system of Living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, with a history spanning more than 700 years, has evolved into a distinctive tradition shaped by religious rituals and established practices. How did this system come into being? How has it evolved and become institutionalized? And why has the golden-urn lot-drawing system, which continues to this day, become a fundamental and inviolable rule for recognizing reincarnated Living Buddhas? Regarding these issues, misconceptions have long persisted both in China and abroad. Some stem from a limited understanding of Tibetan Buddhism, while others result from deliberate misinterpretations driven by ulterior motives. To set the record straight, dispel misconceptions, and present the historical facts as they are, we have produced the video series The Golden Urn: The Reincarnation of Living Buddhas. Bringing together a professional production team, we traveled to Beijing, Xizang, and other locations to conduct in-depth interviews and filming. Drawing on a wealth of precious cultural relics and detailed archival materials, together with authoritative insights from leading Tibetan studies scholars, the series comprehensively explores how the Living Buddha reincarnation system originated, evolved, and has been passed down through the generations.
