Why do bad things happen to good people, and what can yoga actually do about it? This is Session 4 of Discover Yourself, a summary study of Vedic Philosophy centered on the Bhagavad Gita, presented by Vedic University, Seattle. We never ask "why me?" when we win. We only ask it when life turns. In this session we take that question head-on, then walk through the paths the Gita offers as a response: Ashtanga (stillness), Jñāna (knowledge) and Karma (action), and the one thing all three keep pointing toward, Bhakti. IN THIS SESSION Why we audit the bad but never the good (the Merchant Throwing Gifts) Theism, atheism and deism: why belief often shifts with circumstance, not argument (a Titanic story, Darwin's loss, Rabbi Kushner) Is God fair? The impartial Judge in the heart (Bhagavad-gītā 9.29) Karma, Vikarma and Akarma: good in, harmful in, God in COSIUS: why this world is a correction facility, not a prison ECG: how time plays no favorites (Executioner, Cycle, Gambler) IPAGEL: the six enemies pain helps loosen (Illusion, Pride, Anger, Greed, Envy, Lust) Ashtanga-yoga: Arjuna drops the bow, and why you can leave the city but bring the mind along Jñāna-yoga: the Asteroid Prisoner and Alicia, and the power and limit of "neti-neti" Karma-yoga: the Two Hardware-Store Owners and Bhagavad-gītā 2.47 Why every path still needs the heart KEY VERSES Bhagavad-gītā 9.29: samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ Bhagavad-gītā 2.47: karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana CHAPTERS 0:00 Welcome & recap of Sessions 1–3 6:45 The big question: why do good people suffer? 9:45 The Merchant Throwing Gifts 14:15 We never ask "why me" when we win 20:15 Theism, atheism, deism: all circumstantial 29:15 The Judge in the heart (BG 9.29) 32:15 Karma, Vikarma, Akarma 44:15 The Silo of Grain 50:15 COSIUS: the world as a correction facility 1:02:15 ECG: time plays no favorites 1:03:45 IPAGEL: what pain is actually for 1:14:15 Discussion: your hardest "why me" moment 1:24:45 What yoga actually offers: three paths, one target 1:29:15 Ashtanga: Arjuna drops the bow 1:35:15 You can leave the city, but bring the mind 1:36:45 Jñāna: the Asteroid Prisoner and Alicia 1:39:45 Karma-yoga: the Two Hardware-Store Owners 1:45:45 Why every path still needs the heart 1:48:45 Discussion: which path have you leaned on? 1:51:45 Key takeaways 1:54:45 Try this week 1:59:15 Closing, Q&A and what's next COMING NEXT: Session 5, The Personal God: Brahman, Paramātmā, Bhagavān.
